Here at the Brennan-Lucey Academy we are proud to base our class structure around each individual dancer rather than on a semester based system as we know that everyone learns differently, and at different rates. At Brennan-Lucey, we encourage each dancer to continue in each level until they are ready to progress, ensuring that each child receives the proper instruction for their learning style. Meghan and Stephen will use their experience to decide when it is time to try a new class at a different level but will of course take into consideration any input parents and dancers may have. When it is time to try a new class at a different level, we will let you know in plenty of time and it is not restricted to only happen in August; we are always on the lookout and will let you know at any point in the year! As the school is constantly evolving and as the dancers within it continue to learn and advance, the requirements for each class change and adjust. A rough guide to consider may be the following:

Intro to Irish Dance:

Mastery of skips, the first 2 Reel steps, and/or ages out at 5 or 6 years old.

Beginner:

Mastery of two Reel steps, and two Light Jig steps, performed to music without the teachers dancing along. Good firm grasp of the Slip Jig steps.

As we focus on team-work and work towards creating a unity between the dancers, we encourage dancers to wear a Brennan-Lucey uniform (any Brennan-Lucey merchandise and/or all black) with hair tied back and proper (awesome) Irish dance shoes.

Intermediate:

Mastery of two Reel steps, two Light Jig Steps, two Slip Jig steps, and two Heavy Jig steps performed to music without the teachers dancing along.

At this level, as we focus on team-work and work towards creating a unity between the dancers, it is required to wear a Brennan-Lucey uniform (any Brennan-Lucey merchandise and/or all black) with hair tied back and proper (awesome) Irish dance shoes. At this level, as we work towards a focused learning environment based around team-work within the studio, we encourage parents to ‘drop-and-run’, allowing the dancers to learn and create without distraction.

Prizewinner:

Mastery of two Reel steps, two Light Jig steps, two Slip Jig steps, two fast Heavy Jig steps, St. Patrick's Day and the Treble Reel steps performed to music without the teachers dancing along. A firm grasp of the slow Hornpipe. At this level students are required to attend class twice a week for the full class time; there should be no leaving early or coming late due to sports.

At this level, it is again required to wear a Brennan-Lucey uniform (any Brennan-Lucey merchandise and/or all black) with hair tied back and proper (ever-awesome) Irish dance shoes. At this level, there are sadly no spectators permitted into the studio during class times.

Advanced:

Mastery of 3 steps in each the Reel, Slip Jig, slow Heavy Jig and slow Hornpipe, a Traditional Set and the Treble Reel steps. This level is ideal for dancers competing in the Novice/Prizewinner levels. At this level students are required to attend class 2 times a week for the full class time; there should be no leaving early or coming late due to sports. This level is the highest level our non-competitive dancers can achieve and each year will be moving forward with choreography and skills.

At this level, it is again required to wear a Brennan-Lucey uniform (any Brennan-Lucey merchandise and/or all black) with hair tied back and proper (ever-awesome) Irish dance shoes. At this level, there are sadly no spectators permitted into the studio during class times.

Championship:

Mastery of 3 steps in each the Reel, Slip Jig, Heavy Jig and Hornpipe, a Traditional Set and also a Contemporary Set. This level is ideal for dancers competing in Prizewinner, Preliminary, and Open Championships. At this level students are required to attend class 2-3 times a week.

At this level, it is again required to wear a Brennan-Lucey uniform (any Brennan-Lucey merchandise and/or all black) with hair tied back and proper (ever-awesome) Irish dance shoes. At this level, there are sadly no spectators permitted into the studio during class times.

*These are basic guidelines and we reserve the right to use teachers discretion however we will of course take dancers and parents input into consideration*
